Meet the Athletic Trainers
Chris Mathewson
Head Athletic Trainer

Chris Mathewson is beginning his 16th season as the head athletic trainer of Ponderosa.  In addition to being a certified athletic trainer Chris is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist.  Chris earned his Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wyoming in 1994.  In 2001 he earned his Master's degree in Sports Medicine from the United States Sports Academy.

In addition to his duties at Ponderosa High School, Chris also coordinates the Douglas County School District Athletic Trainers Group and serves as the secretary of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association.  He has served as the President of the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association for 6 years and was instrumental in the passage of a state regulatory law for athletic trainers. 

In April 2004 Chris received the national “Above the Call Award” from Training and Conditioning magazine based upon nominations from coaches at Ponderosa.  In March 2005 Chris and his staff received the “Excellence In Colorado High School Athletic Training Award” presented by the Denver Nuggets, recognizing their extraordinary commitment to Ponderosa athletes.

Chris is married and lives in Parker with his wife Wendy and daughters Taylor and Bailey.

Sue Tymkew
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Sue Tymkew is beginning her 4th season as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Ponderosa.  In addition to being a certified athletic trainer, Sue also teaches full time physical education.  Her classes include Team Sports, Individual Sports, Beginning Dance and Athletic Training 1 and 2.  Sue earned her Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education from Western Michigan University in 1984.  In 1985, she earned her Master's degree in Physical Education with Specialization in Athletic Training from Old Dominion University.

Sue has been in the Douglas County School District for 23 years.  Before becoming a Mustang, Sue was the Head Athletic Trainer for Douglas County High School for 13 years.  Along with teaching and athletic training she also coached volleyball, track, basketball and poms throughout her time at D.C. 

Upon arriving at the home of the Mustangs, Sue became the assistant athletic trainer working with Chris Mathewson. Sue enjoys working with athletes and is very proud to be a Mustang!!!

Sue lives in Castle Rock with her two sons, Zachary and Joshua.
