Advanced Placement Studio Art offers the highly motivated student an opportunity to receive college credit while still in high school, as well as produce a portfolio of high quality artwork. Projects include a wide spectrum of media and methods including figure drawing, graphic design, airbrush, lettering and illustration emphasizing production procedures, aesthetics, criticism and art history. Students will complete college designed assignments, and submit a completed portfolio at the end of the year.

This is the introductory class to the art department, and is designed for students who would like to try art for possibly the first time. Students will work with a variety of art materials including pencil, clay, wood, metal, paper, paint, photos, and mixed medias, while completing a number of arts and craft projects. The focus is on basic skills, production and techniques, and some history of the art being done.

This course continues to explore what art can be, as students complete projects in sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, jewelry making, and commercial art. All levels of students are invited to take this course, as they learn to do arts and crafts that may become life long hobbies or careers.

 

CERAMICS I - 15425

This class is designed with the beginning potter in mind. Hand building and wheel throwing techniques in clay will be taught as well as art history, aesthetic education, production procedures and criticism techniques.

 

CERAMICS II - 15430

Prerequisite: Ceramics I

This class is designed for students wishing to continue experiences in hand building and throwing clay on the wheel at an intermediate level. Art history, production procedures, criticism techniques and aesthetic education will be part of the curriculum. (Additional ceramics may be taken with 15435 Independent Study.)

 

CERAMICS III - 15435 (Independent Study)

Prerequisite: Ceramics II and instructor signature

This class is for serious, motivated students who want to explore ceramics and glazing techniques in greater depth. Higher expectations in both quality and quantity of work are expected with each level. A research paper on a contemporary ceramics artist's techniques will be required. Signature of the instructor is required.

 

COMMERCIAL ART I - 15450

Cartooning and comic book art, architectural design, advertising art, fashion, computer graphic arts, and other commercial art applications are part of this introductory course. Students will work with a variety of art materials while learning about layout, design, figure drawing, and finishing real art works. Students of all ability levels can successfully complete this fun and exciting art course. Careers in art are explored while learning and doing projects. This one-semester course is open to all grade levels.

 

COMMERCIAL ART II - 15455

Prerequisite: Commercial Art I

This course further explores commercial art careers in advertising, product design, interior design, cartooning, lettering, computer art, illustration, calendar creation, and multi-media. Students will expand their use of different media, and possibly become professionally proficient with one or more. This 2nd level course is one semester and designed for students who want to learn more about choosing art for a career.

COMMERCIAL ART III - 15460

Prerequisite: Commercial Art II

The committed art student will want to take this one semester course, as he or she prepares a portfolio for college application. All of the course work for the advanced commercial art student is expected to be of a high quality. Students have some freedom in choosing their course of study, possibly focusing on one area of study such as advertising, or architectural rendering, or story illustration. Students will compete in art competitions for scholarships and money prizes.

 

COMMERICAL ART IV - 15465 (Independent Study)

Prerequisite: Commercial Art III and teacher signature

This course is designed as an independent study focus course for the student who wants to pursue a career in commercial art. Students taking this class will be expected to complete a contract of projects designed to explore a field in greater depth than has been possible in an earlier class. Students will, in effect, write their own curriculum for the course, and will then complete a number of projects that address that curriculum. Fashion, advertising, graphic arts, illustration are some of the areas available for this course.

Drawing techniques to fit every learning style and an introduction to painting will be the focus of this course. Students will be evaluated at their individual skill levels. Media covered may include colored pencil, acrylic, pastels, and watercolor in a variety of styles and subjects. This course is designed for students of all levels.

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting I

Students will focus on creative solutions while delving into a wide variety of drawing and painting media, techniques and styles. Individual expression and artistic awareness will be encouraged. Practical experiences such as computer graphics, drawing people, airbrush, watercolor, and acrylic painting will be emphasized.

 

DRAWING AND PAINTING III - 15510

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting II and teacher permission

This class encourages individual, creative exploration of advanced drawing and painting techniques in a wide variety of media. Presentation of artwork in a professional quality portfolio is encouraged. Students will choose from a wide variety of media. Additional drawing and painting may be taken with Independent Study.

 

DRAWING AND PAINTING IV - 15515 (Independent Study)

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting III and teacher signature

This class encourages individual, creative exploration of advanced drawing and painting techniques in a wide variety of media. Emphasis will be on problem solving, communication and developing a personal style. Students will be encouraged to take more risks and experiment with mixed media, larger sizes and unusual surfaces. They will continue to study the elements of art and the principles of design while increasing their skills in craftsmanship and art criticism.

 

JEWELRY I - 15525

This is an introductory course intended to acquaint the student with fundamental construction, processes and jewelry design principles. Such basic skills are soldering, riveting, chaseing, cutting, piercing and forming using a variety of materials. Students taking this class should expect to use torches, tools, and other power equipment. Proper and safe tool use will be emphasized to students in all jewelry classes. Students will also explore current "real world" applications in the field of Jewelry and Metalsmithing.

 


JEWELRY II - 15530

Intermediate exploration of jewelry-making covering advanced construction methods and techniques, building on basic skills learned in Jewelry 1. Inventive use of materials and exploration of advanced techniques and design are used. Students will explore stone setting, lost wax casting, fabrication, soldering, finishing techniques, raising, moving parts, and forming. Works will be taken to a more refined quality. Students will also explore current "real world" applications in the field of jewelry and metalsmithing.

 

JEWELRY III - 15535

Prerequisite: Jewelry II must have been successfully completed and teacher signature

Project Cost: $35.00

 

An advanced course in jewelry with emphasis on creating jewelry designs in 3 dimensions with high manipulation of tools and materials. Such procedures as hinges, catches, tube setting, prong settings, repousse, cold connections, surface textures. Many materials will be manipulated and used. Extensive design and research will be covered in this class. Students must be self-motivated and focused to successfully complete this course.

 

JEWELRY IV - 15540 (Independent Study)

Prerequisite: Jewelry III must have been successfully completed and instructor signature needed

Project Cost: $40.00

 

Advanced methods of creating jewelry with emphasis on design, materials, craftsmanship and skills. Much individual initiative will be expected from the student in this course. Student will be required to complete an artistic statement that addresses historical, contemporary, and design influences, as well as his/her intended meaning. This artistic statement will be presented with the final portfolio for a final portfolio critique.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY I - 15575

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: 35mm camera is required for this course.

Project Cost: $40.00

 

This is an introductory course using black and white and color photography as a fine art medium. It will develop skills in basic camera usage and in digital imaging. Students will work with 35mm film and digital imaging equipment and software to produce a body of work that demonstrates their proficiency with the equipment and the art elements of composition and design. A 35mm camera is required for this course.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY II - 15580

Prerequisite: Photography I and teacher permission (35mm camera is required for this course.)

This is an intermediate level course designed for students who wish to build upon skills learned in Photography I. Course work will include darkroom and traditional camera work as well as digital photography and image manipulation. Students will build an initial digital portfolio.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY III - 15582

Prerequisite: Photography II and teacher signature

This class allows for individualized study for the serious photography student with a desire to explore further techniques and personal style of photography. Image manipulation, presentation, marketing of work in a professional manner will be emphasized. A research paper involving subject material not covered in other photography courses may be completed as part of the course work. Signature of the instructor is required.

 

SCULPTURE I - 15550

This course is designed with the beginning 3-dimensional artist in mind. Basic techniques in clay, plaster, metal, wood, and other media will be covered. Creative problem solving is emphasized utilizing additive and subtractive sculpture techniques.

 


SCULPTURE II - 15555

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Sculpture I

Project Cost: $30.00

 

Students will be introduced to and will work with professional sculpting medias; including clay, stone, wood, or other materials used by practicing sculptors.

 

Students will be expected to complete several projects within the time parameters of this one semester course, and will be expected to learn the processes and tools required for a particular way of sculpting.

 

SCULPTURE III - 15560 (Independent Study)

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Sculpture II and teacher signature

Project Cost: $40.00

 

Students in this advanced course may explore one sculpting media in depth, planning and completing one or more major sculpture pieces in a media of their choosing. All finished works should reflect good design skills as well as working and finishing skills. Works in clay, metal, stone, paper, wood, found objects, plastic or combinations may be chosen.
