Prerequisite: A college-level reading ability and a firm grasp of grammar and composition is recommended for success in this course due to the difficulty of the material. All students are expected to have met all Language Arts standards prior to taking this course.

Expenses: Cost of AP exam - $82.00 (not required, but strongly encouraged); text books - $60.00 (not required, but strongly encouraged).

 

This course is the equivalent to a college-level course in rhetoric and composition. Throughout the school year, students will learn how to read closely to establish audience, purpose, and tone; how to analyze a writer's style for different rhetorical devices; how to employ various methods of persuasion in their own writing; and how to think critically in order to develop an effective argument. Students should have a good command of the English language and disciplined study habits. The focus of the reading material for the majority of the class will be nonfiction, but a variety of texts from different cultures and time periods will be read. Summer reading is required. This course is equivalent to a college freshman course. The student may receive credit and/or advanced placement at college, contingent upon the results of a national test. Emphasis will be placed on critical reading and analysis of poetry, drama, and prose. Students will write frequently, using a variety of techniques including numerous timed essays. BRITISH LITERATURE & COLLEGE PREPARATORY COMPOSITION - 50580

This college-level senior yearlong course emphasizes the critical reading and analysis of major British authors, poets, and dramatists as well as concentrating on writing and language skills. This course teaches students to write clearly and effectively for a variety of college and career environments. Texts include: Beowulf, Price and Prejudice, Macbeth, Frankenstein, The Importance of Being Ernest, The Dubliners. NCAA approved core course . CCHE/HEAR approved course.

 

COMPETITIVE SPEAKING - 50720

Semester: .5 Speech Credit (may be repeated for elective credit)

Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation

Expenses: Students will be responsible for their own tournament expenses.

 

For this semester long course, Saturday tournament attendance is required. Students interested in competitive debate may also register for this class. In this course students will work on the development of skills used in individual competitive speech events. Students will study extemporaneous and impromptu speaking, oratory, and interpretation of poetry, drama, and humor, and duo interpretation of literature. NCAA approved core course.

CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE & COLLEGE PREPARATORY COMPOSITION -50461

This course will focus on non-fiction, while including fiction and technical texts. Students will participate in analytic reading and examination of effective models for writing, while learning to write clearly and effectively for a variety of college and career environments. Texts include: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Obasan, Nightshift, Parallel Journeys, Shoeless Joe. NCAA approved core course. CCHE/HEAR approved course.

 

CREATIVE WRITING - 50470

Prerequisite: English II or Honors English II

 

This course focuses on several forms of creative writing such as poetry, short fiction, and drama or script writing. Students registering for this class should have a definite interest in creative writing. NCAA approved core course . CCHE/HEAR approved course.

 

DEBATE - 50710

Semester: .5 Speech Credit (may be repeated for elective credit)

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: teacher recommendation

Expenses: Students will be responsible for their own tournament expenses.

 

In this semester long course students will learn the fundamentals of argumentation and debate procedures, as well as specific techniques in developing both negative and affirmative cases. Students will develop reading and composition skills for college-level work. This course will include cross-examination, Lincoln-Douglas, and debate of controversial issues with emphasis on the National Debate topic for competition. Saturday tournament attendance is required. This course develops an understanding and appreciation of literature by using the genres of novel, drama, short story, and poetry. Utilizing the writing process, the student is expected to produce a wide variety of written work, including multi-paragraph thesis-driven essays, research-based persuasive writing creative writing, and literary analysis essays. This course will focus on critical thinking skills, vocabulary acquisition, grammar usage and conventions. Texts include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Romeo and Juliet, Greek Mythology. ENGLISH I HONORS - 50310

This intensive course includes the genres and writing experiences of English I, as well as a greater amount of assigned reading and in-depth writing experiences, including advanced thesis-driven compositions. The course includes extensive study of vocabulary, literary terms, grammar usage, and conventions. Summer reading is required. Texts include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Romeo and Juliet, Lord of the Flies, The Secret Life of Bees, Hard Times, Greek Mythology. NCAA approved core course . This course for serious, self-motivated students analyzes great American literature and stresses the essay and literary analysis. Students gain a broader understanding of their American heritage and culture by reading numerous American classics and through writing assignments designed for a variety of purposes, including a research paper. Study of vocabulary, grammar, usage, style, and conventions is ongoing. Summer reading is required. This semester long course is recommended for students with average to low English skills. Students read, write, and interact to identify and experiment with effective communication strategies. Concepts studied include: increasing self-awareness, improving perception and listening skills, identifying and expressing emotions clearly, and resolving conflicts in interpersonal relationships. NEWSPAPER - 50413

Year: 1.0 Elective credit only

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Teacher approval, application, and minimum requirements as detailed on application.

 

During this course, students will plan, write, layout, and produce the high school newspaper, The Mustang Express . All students will write for each issue while also learning digital photography, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe InDesign. Out of class work is required.

 


PUBLIC SPEAKING - 50700

In this semester long course students will develop self-confidence through writing and presenting speeches on various subjects. Developing students' skills in researching, outlining, speech writing, and critical listening will be stressed, with special emphasis on organization and delivery of speeches. Practical application of public speaking skills will also be demonstrated through group discussion activities. NCAA approved core course . CCHE/HEAR approved course.

 

WORLD LITERATURE & ELEMENTS OF COMPOSITION -50571

This course will help students who want to learn to write more effectively and to overcome the structural problems that plague their writing. Analytic reading and examination of effective models of writing are used in addition to critical reading of a variety of texts. The course also emphasizes a critical study of ancient to modern European and Anglo literary classics, as well as contemporary selections from across the globe. Students will increase their reading comprehension while broadening their global awareness, analyzing universal themes, and recognizing individual authors' contributions.

YEARBOOK - 50420

Prerequisite: Teacher approval, application, and minimum requirements as detailed on application.

 

This course gives students the opportunity to produce the school yearbook, Eques. Students experience the responsibility, stress, and, ultimately, the satisfaction found in creating and producing a document sure to last a lifetime. Admission to Yearbook is contingent upon acceptance of an application, and meeting the requirements detailed on the application form. Course size is limited to 30. Out of class work is required.

 

YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION -50575

This course is designed to build reading competency by employing strategies to increase reading speed and comprehension. Students will read a variety of high-interest fiction and non-fiction works. Students will also read independently. Emphasis is placed on student response to literature through classroom discussion, research-based reports, creative writing, and literary analysis
