ACCOUNTING I - 25450

Year: 1.0 credit

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Expenses: Workbooks must be purchased if student writes in it.

 

Learn the steps in the accounting cycle, which includes analyzing source documents, journalizing, posting, trial balance, multi-column worksheet, income statement, statement of changes in owner's equity, balance sheet, and post closing trial balance. Check writing and bank reconciliation as well as income tax preparation are included. This valuable course will give students life long skills for personal record keeping, prepare them for advanced studies of business and accounting, and provide a solid background for entry level job opportunities. This course is a must for business majors.

Prerequisite: Accounting I (25450)

Students learn depreciation methods: straight line, double declining balance, sum of the year's digits, and units of production methods. Other topics are maturity date and value of notes receivable, dishonored and discounted notes receivable, accruals/deferrals, methods of inventory such as: FIFO, LIFO and weighted average cost, interest-bearing notes payable, discounted notes payable, unearned revenue, bonds and bond sinking funds, stocks and stock dividends, forms of organizations such as sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations.

 

BUSINESS LAW - 25475

This course deals with a study of our legal system, the courts, and the law in relation to minors as well as with a study of contracts and bailments. This course is designed to introduce the students to Business Law in their everyday lives. Emphasis is placed on the study of legal rights and obligations that individuals will encounter in everyday business transactions as well as in personal life. Consideration is given to problems and situations that require analysis of rights and responsibilities in legal agreements and relationships. A survey of the division of law and court system is presented. The course ends with a student driven Mock Trial.

 

BUSINESS PRINCIPLES - 25700

This course is designed to help students understand many aspects/elements in the field of business. Business Principals will show how all phases of business activity affect the consumer. Content includes the following: Economics, Marketing, Management, Business Structures, Finance, Careers, Credit Use/Banking, and Consumer Rights.

 

ENTREPRENEURSHIP - 25525

Grades: 10, 11, 12

 

Students will study the nature of small businesses, analyze advantages, risks and opportunities of personal business ownership, learn the process of starting, managing and evaluating a small business. Students will complete a comprehensive business plan including organizational, marketing, and financial sections.

 

INFORMATION PROCESSING I - 25425

Prerequisite: Word Processing (25400) or Teacher approval

 

This course, which uses Microsoft Office, includes web page design and internet instruction, creating word processing documents--letters, business report, resume, creation/manipulation of database, spreadsheet, charts, graphics (desktop publishing), PowerPoint, and integration of these applications as well as use of quick cam/digital camera. Content includes income statement, payroll spreadsheets, sales charts, business cards, newsletter, mail merge letter to 3 colleges requesting information, and sorts/query/filters in databases. These valuable skills will be utilized in college and non-college career choices as well as for personal use. This course satisfies the computer literacy requirement and part of the practical arts requirement for graduation.

Computer literate students gain in-depth knowledge in areas such as, Excel (multiple workbooks, advanced formulas, functions/data tables), Access (advanced filters/sorts, build feature) and Word, PowerPoint projects. Students work in an independent study atmosphere for projects and assignments. Students work with scanner and camera. This class is designed as advanced Information Processing I and is a Prerequisite for Technology Intern Program (SAinT).

 

MARKETING I - 25550

Marketing I is an introductory course designed for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who are interested in exploring marketing. Topics covered include basic marketing and economic concepts, the free enterprise system, legal and ethical issues concerning marketers, selling, advertising and promotion. In addition, communication, interpersonal, leadership and technology skills will be developed, as well as employability and career development strategies. Active participation in DECA is an integral component of the curriculum and is strongly encouraged. Membership in DECA is mandatory for all Marketing I students.

 

MARKETING II - 25555

Marketing II is a course designed for juniors or seniors who are interested in exploring advanced topics in marketing. Successful completion of Marketing I and/or instructor permission is a prerequisite. Topics covered will include physical distribution, purchasing, stock handling, and inventory control; price planning and pricing strategies; marketing research; product planning, branding, packaging, and labeling; extended product features; entrepreneurial concepts, interpersonal and management skills. Students will also develop employability and career development strategies. Active participation in DECA is an integral component of the curriculum and is strongly encouraged. Membership in DECA is mandatory for all Marketing II students.

 

MARKETING WORK EXPERIENCE - 25575

Year: up to 2.0 credits

Grades: 11, 12

Prerequisites: Must be enrolled in

Marketing I or Marketing II and provide own transportation.

Expenses: Required banquet costs

 

Marketing Work Experience gives students who are currently enrolled in a Marketing class the option of earning course credit for out-of-school employment. Students will be expected to secure employment with a district-approved employer; work a minimum of 120 hours per semester for each period of Marketing Work Experience on their class schedule; maintain employment continuously throughout the semester; provide documentation of hours worked and perform satisfactorily on the job.

 

PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS TRAINING - 25625/25626

Year: 1.0 credit

Prerequisite: Word Processing ( 25400 ) or teacher approval

 

Professional Business Training is beneficial for both male and female students who wish business training for a career in the world upon graduation from high school or college. Be on the cutting edge of business with management skills, leadership training and technology enhancement skills.

Professional Business Training Work Experience (25650) may be taken concurrently in order to receive additional credit.

 

PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS TRAINING -WORK EXPERIENCE - 25650 / 25651

Year: up to 2.0 credits

Grades: 11, 12

Prerequisite: Must be currently enrolled in Professional Business Training and have the ability to provide own transportation.

 

Students work on-the-job in a business-related area and may receive up to two school credits while earning pay from the employer. This Work Experience is for juniors and seniors who are concurrently registered in Professional Business Training. Students may be dismissed one or two periods early in order to work. Students who wish to work and NOT be dismissed early, and desire the extra school credit, may enroll in out of school work experience.

 

TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION (SAinT) 40610 (Fall), 40615 (Spring)

Semester: 0.5 Practical Arts credit

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Information Processing II (25430) and teacher approval.

 

This is a student assistant intern position in technology. Students will assist students and teachers with technology throughout the building. The Ponderosa web site is maintained through this course. Students help with software, hardware and network issues.

 

WORD PROCESSING - 25400

Semester : 0.5 credit

Grades : 9, 10, 11, 12

Expenses: $10.00

 

This comprehensive course is formulated to teach basic computer operational skills, the alphanumeric keyboard, and 10-key numeric operations. Students learn proper keyboard-ing technique by touch, ten keypad by touch, and correct formatting of business documents to build on the skill of keyboarding.
