Dear Friends,
I'm sure you have already noticed the photo. I included it for a couple of reasons. I think it is important for students to understand that everyone around them has been where they are today. Indeed, when I put on those white gloves and that little hat, I was truly prepped for my first day of school at Will Rogers Elementary School in McAlester, OK.
The thing I remember most about that day was that I wouldn't let my parents walk me in. As I approached the school my anxiety mounted with every step until I was almost immobile by the time I got to the door. Once inside, I met Mrs. Shepard and, with her as my anchor, began what turned into a lifelong joy of learning and, eventually, teaching.
Mrs. Shepard taught me that kids need to see that their teachers and their principal are there to make them comfortable and ready to learn. They also need to know, as Mrs. Shepherd had to point out to me several times, how to behave in a manner that makes their education more productive and their relationships more fruitful. Personally, I like the idea of simply saying, "Be kind. Work hard."
I want your child to enjoy school. I want your child to succeed. That's a commitment that I share with every one of my colleagues at Northridge. Get to know us as we get to know your child. Oh, and my advice: regardless of what your child says on that first day...walk them to the door.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Morris |
