Educational Philosophy

Art is full of discoveries and surprises that result in life long learning opportunities.  Making art helps students discover and nurture their imaginations while developing critical thinking and original problem solving skills.  It also offers students the opportunity to explore the world around them.

Each of us has a story to tell and images are such a primary form of communication; art becomes an effective way to communicate individual stories.  Each student possesses the ability to be creative, and art is just one vehicle of expressing emotion and thought.

Art involves information gathering, analysis, identifying opportunities and problems, dealing with ambiguity, creating meaning, and finally, expressing and defending personal opinions. Students are encouraged to be responsible for their art making, the choices they make and why they made those choices.  Students are also encouraged to continually ask questions, which helps them to appreciate and respect different perspectives and styles of art making.  I feel that students learn better with a teacher who is a facilitator of their learning.

Helping students discover different ways of expressing themselves through the visual arts is such a rewarding experience for me.

The greater part of our happiness depends on our attitudes and not on our circumstances.
