Severe Weather
In the event of dangerous weather conditions at dismissal time, the school administration may deem it necessary to delay dismissal. If possible, Heritage staff will post clearly visible red flags by the front door as will as the side fence along Astorbrook as soon as we determine that classes will be held after 4:00 pm. This will allow parents to know that they may go directly to classrooms for student checkout. Parents must sign out in the classroom to acknowledge that a child has been released from class. Student will be dismissed using usual procedures once the dangerous conditions cease.
In the case of weather that may endanger staff/parents and children coming in or leaving the building, we will hold all children until an all clear has been given.
Winter Weather Procedures
Weather Hotline: 303-387-SNOW (7669)
Predicting weather and road conditions is a challenge, particularly in a district with nearly 900 square miles. The safety of each of our nearly 50,000 students is our priority. We respect your right as a parent to make individual decisions for your child. If you choose to keep your child out of school due to severe weather, his or her absence will be excused.
Starting with the 2007-2008 school year, a new process to report schedule changes will go into effect. Watch for announcements regarding schedule delays and closures by Feeder Areas (listed below). The District website and telephone hotline will continue to be the best resource in the event of delay and closure. Only exceptions to normal schedules will be announced.
The following headlines will be used on local media outlets:
• DougCo School District - All Schools
• DougCo Douglas County HS (or DCHS) Feeder Area
• DougCo Castle View Feeder Area
• DougCo Ponderosa Feeder Area
• DougCo Chaparral Feeder Area
• DougCo Rock Canyon Feeder Area
• DougCo Highlands Ranch HS (or HRHS) Feeder Area
• DougCo Mountain Vista Feeder Area
• DougCo ThunderRidge Feeder Area
On a delayed schedule, elementary, middle and high schools start ONE HOUR later than the normal school start time, and buses run one hour later than normal.
When activity buses are canceled because of severe weather conditions, ALL activities in the Feeder Area are canceled, including meetings, conferences, sporting events, practices/rehearsals, performances, etc. The decision on activity buses will be announced by 1:30 p.m.
The District will use the following methods to notify parents about weather-related school schedule changes:
• Local television and radio broadcasts starting at 5:00 a.m.
