DOUGLAS COUNTY PRESCHOOLS
Early Childhood Education...celebrating each child's journey of discovery
Philosophy
The Douglas County Preschool Program recognizes and supports the unique gifts and abilities of each child.
History
During the early 1970's, public schools were mandated to
develop a "Child Find" process which would provide free screening
and evaluation services for children from birth to 21 years of age.
The purpose of including children from birth to 5 years in this mandate
was to identify developmental concerns early so parents of preschoolers
could obtain help for their children before they started public school.
In 1979, Douglas County began a preschool program to meet the needs of 3 and 4 year olds identified with developmental delays. The program was successful in meeting the individualized needs of the children as well as providing a quality preschool education. Many requests were made by families looking for high quality preschool experiences, to have their typically developing preschoolers attend this preschool with their siblings. Positive benefits were noted by both parents and staff when all children were included and educated together. Requests continued to be made by more families in the community to participate in the preschool program. In 1991 the preschool expanded the program to include community preschoolers on a space available basis, supported by community student tuition. Through an inclusive preschool setting, the learning needs of all children are met in the most respectful and positive way.
