information We are three weeks into the new year, and planning for the 2007-08 school year has already begun. Planning for a new year while only beginning the second half of the current year is a bit like changing a tire on a moving car!

Having said that, I must say that there is a “constant” that drives us as we work with your children. We know that we are preparing students for a world beyond their school days, and that world is a huge unknown. Futurists have been saying for decades that the world can survive indefinitely in terms of solving problems with infrastructure and technology—there are plenty of intellectual resources to come up with solutions in those areas. However, what will ultimately put the world in jeopardy is human unwillingness to learn about and accept fellow humans—to be willing to get along with each other and to work on solutions in that area.

Having just celebrated the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., it is fitting that we consider one of his quotes—“Intelligence plus character—that is the true goal of education….” While we don’t have a formal character education program at Coyote Creek, attributes of strong character are embedded in each adult/student interaction: honesty, dependability, strong work ethic, expectations to always do our best, to name a few.

So while the managerial type of planning must change from year to year, depending on available resources and latest research about Best Practice, the task of preparing our students to be responsible citizens in an ever-changing world will continue to be an important part of their education here at Coyote Creek.

kidskornerOn November 20th eighteen students gathered in the library to begin practice sessions for the annual Geo Bee. Six sessions later, they competed for the opportunity to take the State Qualifying Test. On December 13 Nathan won the Coyote Creek Geography Bee, with Connor a close second. Congratulations to all students who chose to spend a month honing their geography skills!

informationCoyote Creek Readers
The following students from Coyote Creek completed the fall reading program at the Highlands Ranch Library. In order to complete this program, they were asked to read for twelve hours over eight weeks and keep track of the hours on their reading log. We are proud of these students and want to acknowledge their success. The next program begins in February.
