informationCommunication is so important.

When the bylaws for our School Advisory Council were written a few years ago, we considered the state-mandated minimal membership of three parents and one teacher. We felt that each track needed a voice (actually, more than one voice). So we built our ideal SAC around three parents and one teacher from each track. We have not been able to recruit nearly that number in the past.
However, this year we are fortunate to have a totally full SAC, with the exception of only one parent vacancy remaining. This is phenomenal, and our meetings have been full of rich dialogue about CCE’s work and level of success. It seems very fitting that one of the first topics we have been discussing is that of communication. We often hear that the school does not communicate with the parent community about upcoming events, topics of interest, etc. SAC members are brainstorming ways to learn more about that concern, in light of the fact that the school utilizes this newsletter, our website, flyers in Thursday Folders, messages on the marquee and, in some cases, we send letters home to families that are impacted by a particular situation, in an effort to keep parents informed.
The school newsletter in most schools is read by only about one third of the school’s parents. So one idea that SAC is pursuing is a “prize” giveaway that is open to all who read this newsletter. In each issue after this one, there will be a short sentence embedded within the body of the newsletter with a message such as, “Write your family’s name on the front page of this newsletter and turn that page in to the school office for an opportunity to win a small prize.” These prizes will consist of donated gift certificates, etc. from local merchants. All turned-in pages will be put in a “hat” and one or two will be drawn every three weeks to receive a “prize”. The hope is that this campaign will result in an increased readership.
Our SAC members are considered to be key communicators; in our meetings information about school programs, budget, and student achievement is shared. These meetings are also forums for members to bring questions about school operations and rumors that may be circulating. The goal is for them to be able to access factual information that they can share with the community as needed.
While I prefer that parents call or email me directly with questions and concerns, I also realize that not everyone is comfortable with direct communications with the Principal. So please take advantage of the twelve parents who sit on Coyote Creek’s SAC. Their names are listed within this newsletter. They want to serve you, and assisting with factual information-sharing is one way they accomplish service to our community. Many thanks to them for their willingness to invest time and energy on behalf of our children.

kidkornerGirl Scout Troop 1676 sold multicolored wristbands to benefit the Hurricane Katrina victims. In less than two weeks, over $1600 was collected. Many thanks to these hard-working and caring 6th grade Girl Scouts. Thanks to our students and families for supporting this fundraiser!
Coyote Creek families also contributed many boxes of school supplies to the Hurricane Katrina victims through the Douglas County Educational Foundation. A complete article follows in the District Newsline Digest.

Coyote Creek Readers
The following (70!) Coyote Creek students have completed the summer reading program at the Highlands Ranch Library. In order to complete this program they were asked to read for twelve hours over eleven weeks and keep track of the hours on reading logs. We are very proud of these students!

informationDestination Teams Are Forming!!!

Information Night: Wednesday October 12th, 7pm,. CCE Library.
What is Destination Imagination? Think of it as Creativity 101. It’s a program and a competition! Kids work together on teams, tap their creativity, and find innovative, unique solutions to complex challenges, then present their solution at a local tournament. It’s having kids realize that no challenge is too big or too complex. It’s FUN! Look for the information flyer and registration form in this week's Thursday Folders.

This is a current listing of all items that can be found on our Information Board, which is located just outside the Music Room. The listing we are providing will give all parents an opportunity to see what is available, and they can have their student pick up any of the items from the main office, or parents can call our office (303-387-6175) or “order” items that can then be sent home with their student.
