informationWelcome to the 2005-06 school year! And welcome to the graduating class of 2018 as they join the Coyote Creek family as kindergarteners!
This year we are experiencing some changes in “the way it’s always been done”. Of course, we all know there is very little in our lives that has gone unchanged, and school routines are no different.
One of the most valuable pieces of information that I learned as I was beginning my work in administration was about the change process. As many of you know, there is a definite process we all go through as we deal with change—it’s much like the grieving process! That’s because when we encounter a change, we have to give up what’s familiar before we can truly interact with the new thing in our life. The process involves shock (when we learn about the change), anger (because we have to deal with the change), denial (because we don’t want to have to make the change), then moves on to various stages of acceptance.
Some people move through this process quickly, and others take years to deal with some of the changes they encounter. Life in our society today is full of change, so one of the skills that our students need is to be able to deal with change in a healthy and realistic way. The most effective way to teach these life skills is for adults to model them in real life. Our students have teachers at school, of course, as well as teachers (their parents, relatives, family friends, etc.) at home. We will serve our children well if we reflect on how we, individually, deal with our daily encounters with change.
So here’s to a successful school year, with successful experiences for us all!

kidkornerAfter hearing reports that tsunami victims continue to need our help, Coyote Creek’s Student Council decided to do a year-end fundraiser in May and June. They asked students to “Bring a Friend and Be a Friend”. Stuffed toy “friends” came to school on two days last spring, and students and families collected $1036.09 for tsunami victims.
These funds were sent to UNICEF to be used to specifically help the children in the tsunami area. Once again, the Coyote Creek community’s heart has shown brightly!

Readers are encouraged to submit items for this column. Often we at school do not know the accomplishments of students outside school. Please include your phone number so we can reach you if we need more information.

informationWhat’s an Administrative Intern??
Over the past few years, we have started our school year with one or more temporary administrative interns. These have been secondary teachers pursuing an administrative license who needed to work in an elementary setting for a certain number of hours.
This school year Jen Murtha, our 5B teacher, is pursuing an advanced degree and licensure as an elementary school administrator. She is different than our previous temporary interns because her administrative license will be specifically for the elementary level, meaning that part of her required work is to do 400 internship hours on site. Consequently, during her off-track time she will be “shadowing” Ms. Dow and Ms. Montagriff, and assisting them in various administrative tasks. During her on-track time she will reduce her administrative involvement significantly so that she can be a fulltime fifth grade teacher for her students.
If you receive a call from Ms. Murtha this year about a discipline situation, or some other need for communication from school to home, you can be assured that she is acting “legitimately” and under the supervision of our administrative team. We are so pleased to be able to accommodate her post-graduate academic and clinical needs!
