Today
I want to address two items.....
Number One: Every spring Coyote Creek’s School Advisory Council sends
out a Parent Survey in an effort to get feedback from our school community.
We know we are a good school, but also realize that we can’t rest
on our proverbial laurels. A truly good school keeps its ear to the ground.
This spring we are taking one more step into the world of technology. Douglas
County Schools now has the ability to produce an online survey, and we
are taking advantage of that capability. Look for a flyer in today’s
Thursday Folder. It will give the address of the website and instructions
for completing the online Parent Survey.
Number Two: Last week’s water main break in our parking lot revealed
a gap in communications between home and school in several cases. As we
attempted to reach parents to apprise them of the need to close school
for the day, we discovered numerous situations in which the phone numbers
we had been given for work, cell phones, and emergency contacts were not
accurate. Work numbers yielded information that the parent no longer worked
at that number; cell phone numbers yielded recorded messages that the particular
number was no longer in service. Fortunately, this was not a situation
in which students were in danger; the biggest impact was the fact that
school personnel had to wait up to five hours to connect with some parents.
Please be sure to notify the school when any of your phone numbers change;
state law does require that schools have current contact information for
each student. But just as important is our need to let you know if and
when your child needs you during the school day, if they’re ill,
or if school is being dismissed early, or if there is an emergency situation
at school. Please make sure all your contact information is up to date.
Here’s to accurate information in both of these areas!

Destination
Imagination
Coyote Creek had three teams represented at the Pikes Peak/South Metro
Regional Destination Imagination Tournament on Saturday April 9th in
Colorado Springs. Over 150 teams from Littleton, Douglas County, and
the Pikes Peak Region presented their unique solutions to one of the
six challenges that the Destination Imagination program publishes each
year. Our three teams did a fantastic job and have worked extremely
hard over the last four months to prepare for this year's tournament.
Here are the results:

| This
team participated in the non-competitive primary division.
Their challenge was to create a story of what happens after
the real story ends. Although this division was non-competitive,
they were still evaluated. Their feedback was exceptional.
They were described as '"very original" and that
their props and scenery and costumes were "amazing." The
team work was impressive. Good Job! |

| This
team's challenge was to create two original inventions.....an
initial invention and a serendipitous invention that came about
because of a 'by chance' event. One of the inventions had to
really work or accomplish some steps. The team needed to write
and present a story that demonstrated the inventions and serendipitous
event. This team did a great job of integrating science they
learned in the classroom into a creative story about Paint
that really makes pictures look like they are coming to life.
They were recognized at the awards for achieving overall 6th
place...in one of the most challenging events this year! |

| This
team's challenge was to produce a live radio show that featured
an original story, live sound effects, a team created technical
sound effect, a breaking news bulletin, and a commercial with
a jingle and an outrageous claim. Their amazingly original
story delighted the audience with its humor about two "teethtectives," Jawlock
Holmes and Wise Wisdom Watson, on the case to crack down on
tooth decay and search for the Canine Killer. There are some
6th graders on the team, so this group competed at the middle
school level and they won Second Place! They will now move
on to the State Tournament at DU on April 30th. Congratulations! |
Readers are encouraged to submit items for this column. Often we at school
do not know the accomplishments of students outside school. Please include
your phone number so we can reach you if we need more information.

Plans for the 2005-06 School Year
Planning for the next school year has been underway for a couple of months,
and we are now ready to share some information with you.
Projections for Coyote Creek’s enrollment next year are down, meaning
that resources for our programs have also decreased. One of the most obvious
is the deletion of the 4D section. Next year’s fourth grade is the
smallest in the school, with only 84 students. Consequently, we will have
only three sections of 4th grade next year. Reassignment of Track D students
has already been completed.
Our Technology position has also been cut to half-time. Mrs. McKibben is
retiring at the end of this year, so the change will, thankfully, not impact
her. We are currently in the process of hiring her replacement, and restructuring
our technology program to maintain as much student service as possible.
We had five maternity leaves this year, filled by one-year-only teachers.
Julie Waggoner, Jacqui Young, and Michelle Parr have decided to be full-time
moms—we will miss them terribly, but are in total support of their
decisions. Below is the listing of classroom teachers for 2005-06:

INFORMATION
BOARD
This is a current listing of all items that can be found on our Information
Board, which is located just outside the Music Room. While this is handy
for those who are able to be in the school frequently, we know that there
are parents whose schedules just do not allow them to be here often. The
listing we are providing will give all parents an opportunity to see what
is available, and they can have their student pick up any of the items from
the main office, or parents can call our office (303-387-6175) to “order” items
that can then be sent home with their student.
