The class had a great time on our Native American field trip to Stockton tipis. Students were apart of opening and closing ceremonies, shot bow and arrows, played Native American games, heard stories from the past, and sat in authentic tipis and learned all the different ways the Plains Indians used the buffalo. We used what we learned in our Native American unit for our last technology project of the year. Students were taught how to use “Keynote” which is like Power Point, but has more options and is easier to insert sound, pictures, and text. The class enjoyed using this software application.

Thanks to you all! I just wanted to say thanks for the wonderful birthday the class gave me on the 2nd. It was such a great surprise and the hockey theme was wonderful (sorry Avs Fans). It was very thoughtful and I have been so lucky this year to have your students in my class. Thanks so much!!! And... GO WINGS!!!!
Reading/Writing: We are on our final region on our Native American unit. So far we have covered the Northwest, the Southwest, and Plains regions. This week we will be learning about the Northeast Woodlands region. When looking at these regions, we cover the tribes that lived there and their food, shelter, clothing, how they traveled and their customs and traditions. This unit has required the class to do a lot on non-fiction reading, which they need.
I am hoping to get one more writing assignment in for this school year and it will be a piece on a legend. Students will create their own legends, just like they did with fairy tales in the fall. We have been reading legends this last week since Native Americans had so many of them. We will begin drafting our own short legends this week.
Spelling: We will take the unit 10 spelling cloze test the beginning of this week (5/12) and then start unit 11. This unit covers silent letters in words (ex: silent e, gh, b etc), r-controlled words, and more work on homophones. It is a short unit and we should finish it before the end of the year.
A.R. (Accelerated Reader): (Accelerated Reader): This is the last week for your 3rd grader to reach their final AR goal of the year. These goals were set back in the beginning of March and your 3rd grader has had over 2 months to reach the goal they set for themselves. Friday, May 16th is the deadline to meet it. Almost half the class has already done so and several more are almost there!
We are well into unit 10 which covers measuring length, volume, weight, capacity, mean and median and using coordinates on a grid. We are scheduled to take the unit 10 assessment the beginning of next week (5/19). We will only get in a few lessons of unit 11 before the end of the school year. Unit 11 covers elapsed time, temperature, and probability.
