Do you know what Hanukkah means? Hanukkah means dedication. The menorah is the biggest tradition of the Jewish faith. What is a menorah? A menorah is a candle stand with nine branches. In eight of the branches there are candles all the same height. In the middle of the menorah is a taller candle used to light the other candles. The middle candle is called the Shamash that means servant. Each night one candle is lit with a blessing. The menorah represents the burning light in the temple. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights. Hanukkah starts on the 4th of Kislev, which is December. Many of the Jews cook their foods in oil during Hanukkah. Why? It reminds the Jews of the oil in the temple. One of the Jews favorite foods is a jelly like doughnut. Some people also celebrate Chanukah, which is a mix of Hanukkah and Christmas. Every night in Chanukah, the children get a gift and light one of the candles. Do you think Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas are alike in any way?
