All around the world people love to cook! There are so many different recipes and cultures. For instance, did you know that folks from the southern United States make a very special food called black-eyed peas? They start the New Year with this delicious food and they believe it gives them good luck and prosperity. The Jewish celebrate New Years by eating delicious fruit. But they prepare it a little different. They eat apples dipped in yummy honey. Madrid, Spain also likes fruit, but they think grapes are tastier. They just pop them in their mouths and they have a pleasant side dish. As for the Greeks, they do a fun little game with their food. They put one coin in a single piece of bread and they think who ever gets the bread with the coin will get good luck for the rest of the year. That food is called a Pets Cake.
Want to hear more? Here is an interesting thought. Buddhists celebrate the New Year by having a dish called the guthok, which is a special dish with 9 ingredients! But there will be one dish with the unlucky lump of charcoal in it, and if you receive that dish, they believe you will get an evil heart! What would you do if you got that lump of charcoal in your dish? The Japanese eat food that they call the red snapper. They believe the red color brings them luck. All around the world people are cooking and eating all kinds of different foods for the holidays! This year how about trying to spice up the holiday fun by tasting all kinds of different foods! Remember, you never know how it tastes before you give it a try!
