St. Nick was born over one thousand years (about 280 A.D.) ago and died around December 6th! He did great deeds by helping the poor and helpless. When he died, myths sprang up about him all around the Mediterranean Sea. He was thought to calm rough seas, help kids, and help the poor when they were in need. He also would help desperate sailors. When Myra was overthrown, sailors brought his bones to Bari. From there the legend spread and St. Nick became a European tradition. He is known in different ways in different countries. In England he is knows as “Father Christmas" and in France he is known as “Pere Noel.” In the United States he used to be called " Kris Kringle" or "Bellsnickle." December 6th was thought of as a lucky day to get married and have a big feast. In Europe, St. Nick was most popular and he set a positive example.
