Purpose

Experiments are fun, and even more when they explode. This experiment is awesome because it explodes for a silly reason.

Why does it explode? Is this a chemical reaction? Can you use other items for it?

Materials

You will need a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke, four Mentos, safety goggles, and a rain poncho.

Hypothesis

Logan: “I think it explodes because there is a chemical in Mentos and maybe an acid in Diet Coke, that makes it explode. It will be awesome!”

Isabelle: “I think that when the Mentos mix with the Diet Coke it will explode.”

Procedure

First put on your safety goggles and the rain poncho.  Then open the two-liter bottle of Diet Coke. Next drop four Mentos in the top of the bottle. The Coke should start to explode out of the top.

Record

We practiced this experiment, but it was very cold, which affected the explosion. We dropped the Mentos in the Diet Coke but the liquid only came out of the top a little bit. So we did it again in warmer weather, and it did explode. We filmed a video of what we did and how much Diet Coke came out of the top.

Conclusion

In the end everything went really well. At first it did not explode because of the cold weather, but after we tried it in normal weather, it worked just fine. If you would like to try this experiment at home make sure you have a parent or guardian with you. Have fun, but whatever you do, don’t eat the Mentos with a sip of Diet Coke. It is very dangerous!
