Portion Distortion

By Jessica Stanley and Tanya Barcikowski

The focus of our station, Portion Distortion, was teaching kids how to make their lives healthier by controlling their portion size.

Some of the students didn’t even know what a portion was. Did you know that a serving of meat should be no bigger than a deck of cards, and when using oil in cooking you should use no more than the diameter of a quarter?

Sixty one percent of Americans are overweight because they overeat, especially at restaurants where portion sizes are very large. Over the years the portions have grown at restaurants immensely, and so have our waistlines!

Our goal was that when kids left our station, they knew all about portion sizes and how much they should eat, and it is fine to leave food on your plate!

Remember: Bigger isn’t always better!
