By Jessica Stanley and Brian Harrity

The Competition

The competition started with 18 fourth and fifth grade students. By the seventh round two were left: Lauren Gardner and Rachel Reichman both fifth grade students. By the end one was left standing, Rachel Reichman. Brian and I caught up with Rachel to ask her about some of her experiences in the Spelling Bee.

“I hoped I would, but I didn’t think I would.”

Were you in the school bee last year?

“Yes I was and I got pretty far.”

How did you feel after you won the spelling bee?

“It was one of the best moments of my life and I didn’t want the feeling to end.”

How did you prepare for the Spelling Bee?

“I studied hard and read lots of books about spelling.”

How did you do in the District Spelling Bee?

“I misspelled the word chimichanga early in the competition. A chimichanga is a fried Mexican burrito.”
