"The Bee"

By Jessica Stanley and Brian Harrity

Do you think computers are making us more complacent about spelling?  Well the Spelling Bee can help that!  The Spelling Bee is an educational program built to help children all around the country!  Did you know that the Spelling Bee started in 1925?  That was a long time ago!  The National Spelling Bee was originally started to widen a child’s vocabulary.  The focus hasn’t changed but the competition has gotten stronger.

Imagine you are standing on a bright, lighted stage. Everyone is watching you. Your hands are trembling with fear. You are given a simple word and you misspell it. You are devastated. You wish you could go back and change it all.

This is how some participants might feel when they misspell a word. But to tell you the truth it’s not so bad. It is a great accomplishment to qualify for your school Spelling Bee. There’s always next year!

Prior to even stepping onstage there is lots of work involved.  You have to pass the qualifying test and you have to attend at least five of the six Spelling Bee practices; you even have to practice at home. Like they say "practice makes perfect.”

To be involved in the 2009 BRE School Spelling Bee contact Mrs. Phelan, the Spelling Bee coordinator, about qualifying. For more information about Spelling Bee’s go to http://www.spellingbee.com/.
