Seconds for Lunch

The Douglas County School District School Lunch Program is designed to give each student foods from the five different food groups each day.

Students are asked to choose at least 3 of those 5 food choices.  When they eat all of the food choices it has been shown that most students generally are full.  However, as children grow and go through growth spurts, their appetites require more food.  We recommend that students take second helpings of fresh fruits and vegetables. A well-balanced diet offers you many mouth-watering food choices. Each of the basic food groups supplies a different combination of nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

In Douglas County School District, we believe that the choice of doubles (or second helpings) is a choice that parents have the right to make.  When doubles of the entrée are requested, we ask for permission from the parent.

Because we keep our costs low in our lunch program, we require that the student pay an additional amount for the second entrée portion.  This year we have been charging 80 cents per portion which is being reviewed for next year.

If you would like to give permission for your child/ren to be eligible for ‘seconds’ please download the permission form, and turn the completed form into the BRE cafeteria.

This information is then kept on our point of sale computer for reference as students go through the lunch line.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Area Manager, Ana Oldham, for clarification or further information.

Before and After School programs (operating 6:30am-9:00am and 3:50pm-6:00pm) may be added at any time at an additional cost ($5 for Before School, $4 for After School), and the three-day minimum does not apply to Before and After School.

  1. Gifted Talented Clustering will be implemented at Buffalo Ridge Elementary for the 2007-2008 school year.

Cluster grouping is an administrative procedure in which identified gifted students at a grade level are assigned to one or more classrooms.  The classroom teacher has received special training in how to teach gifted students and will co-teach sessions with the gifted talented coordinator.  The other students in the class are of mixed ability.

Differentiated instructional opportunities allow gifted students to interact with their intellectual as well as their age peers. Through cluster grouping the intellectual, social, and emotional needs of the gifted students can be addressed.
