Social Studies Standard 2 - Culture: The student demonstrates an understanding of culture
as the learned behavior of people, including their belief systems,
languages, social relationships, institutions and organizations,
and forms of expression.
2.1 Knows how to use the nine cultural elements in the study of
a group as related to geography.
2.2 Understands the history, interactions and contributions of
the various people and cultures that came to the United States
over time.
2.3 Understands the ways cultures have expressed and transmitted
their beliefs and values.
2.4 Understands the significance of common people and historical
figures who believed in democratic values.
2.5 Understands that people of different cultures create traditions
to transmit their beliefs and values.
2.6 Knows that artistic expression varies in different regions
of the country and contributes to the nation's cultural development.
Social Studies Standard 3 - Location and Place: The student
demonstrates an understanding of location and place as related
to people, environments and events in the past and present.
Location: the position of a point on the Earth's surface
expressed by means of a grid (absolute) or in relation (relative)
to the position of other places.
Place: a point of reference having distinctive physical and human
characteristics which distinguish them from other locations.
3.1 Knows the location of the major physical and cultural features
in the United States.
3.2 Knows the characteristics of urban, suburban, megalopolis
and rural regions.
Social Studies Standard 4 - Interaction: The student demonstrates
an understanding of interaction between people and groups, how
they modify their environment, and the consequences of dependencies,
adaptations, and modifications.
4.1 Knows effects of interaction of people with resources.
4.2 Understands the history, interactions and contributions of
the various people and cultures that came to United States over
time.
4.5 Explains how public policy is formed and carried out at local,
state and national levels and the roles that individuals and groups
play in the process.
Social Studies Standard 5 - Change: The student demonstrates
an understanding of change through the interpretation and prediction
of its causes and effects.
5.1 Understands how characteristics of place and time influence
the development of events or actions.
5.2 Understands developments in technology and production and
how these changes influenced the lives of workers.
Social Studies Standard 6 - Chronology: The student demonstrates
an understanding of the chronological organization of events and
major eras.
6.1 Knows the chronological order of important events in American
History.
6.2 Knows the chronology of historical developments and events
and their causes and effects.
Social Studies Standard 8 - Systems: The student demonstrates
an understanding of systems, institutions and structures.
8.5 Understands that geographic features have influenced the U.S.
economy.
8.7 Understands that government provides certain goods and services
and pays for them through taxation.
8.9 Identifies important ideas or principles that make an effective
rule or law.
Science Standard 5: The student demonstrates an understanding
of ways that science, technology, and human activity have impact
on the world and its resources.
5.2 Understands how human activities and scientific advancements
positively and negatively affect our society and the environment.
Language Arts Standard 2: The student demonstrates the
ability to conduct research through developing an idea and accessing
and evaluating information from a variety of print, media and
technological sources.
2.2 Students select and evaluate resources and technology to access

2.3 Knows and uses organizational features of electronic information
(e.g., passwords, icons, keyword searches, entry menu features,
pull down menus) to locate information.
