Introduction

The Governor has declared July 28 Colorado Cares Day: A Little Bit of Time Makes a Big Difference. This year's event marks the state's 125th birthday - Colorado joined the United States on August 1, 1876. Governor Owens is encouraging citizens across the state to lend a helping hand in their community by volunteering with a local nonprofit organization. The Task

Your team will prepare a presentation about Colorado. The report will contain information from one of the three categories: The History of Colorado, The Land of Colorado, and The Government of Colorado. The report will contain a written component and will be presented as a group. The writing will be submitted in standard report format with an introduction, supporting details, a conclusion, and citations of information sources. Your group will choose how to present the information to the class; electronic slide show, a play, presentation with visual aids, etc. You should conference with your teacher about the best presentation method for your team.

The Process

You will need to complete the following steps to successfully complete your project:

1. You will be working in teams. Begin by establishing your work organization. Who will be responsible for which information? What time schedules do you have to work with? Where and how will you organize and store your information - both computer information and papers?

2. Set a timeline for yourself and your team. When will you have all of the necessary information? When will you complete your rough draft? Did you leave enough time for editing?

3. Conduct your preliminary research. Be sure to keep track of which tasks have been completed and what information you still need.

4. Begin the rough draft of your writing. You will submit one report, but all teammates should contribute. Begin to prepare materials for your presentation.

5. Determine what information you still need. Do you need to locate additional resources? Did you recheck your notes? Do you have information from all of the categories?

6. Add any new information and edit your report. Did you check the spelling? Are your words accurate and descriptive? Do the graphics used support the text? Did you include your name(s)?

7. Complete your presentation materials. Does each team member have a part to present? Is your information accurate? Will your audience understand what you are presenting? How will you know that they understood?

Learning Advice / Guidance

Working in a group: Since you will be working in a group, identify each person's responsibilities. Will you each work on all components, completing the project one step at a time? Or will you each take a task and be responsible for that part? If you each take a task, help your team identify how you will work together. Have each member write what their job and responsibilities will be, then how they will depend on each of the other group members.

Time schedules: Consider the due dates from your teacher, your computer schedule, and the amount of class time you will have.

Storing information: Because this is an extended project that will require weeks to complete, it is critical that you determine how you will store your information. You will probably want to set up a folder to store papers and save your computer information on the file server. If you are working in a group, you should create one team folder to store all papers so if a member is absent, others can still access the information. Put one person in charge of organizing this folder.
